Key challenges

The Poseidon vision is about taking action now: Today we build the energy system of tomorrow in the context of this larger vision of sustainability. This vision drives changes today, both on the institutional and technical level.

POSEIDON requires innovations in both energy technologies and energy systems. And at first sight this appears to be the key challenge of POSEIDON. However, the true challenge lies in organising the right institutional setting that supports the development of large POSEIDON-like systems. A new harmonised approach is needed which does not solely focus on wind energy, but also incorporates other marine energy technologies as well as offshore oil and natural gas resources. This will act as a major driver for innovations both on the technical and system level.

In the mean time concrete projects should be built (and are being built), in line with the vision, in order to create the industry and knowledge base that is needed for larger system innovations. This process of learning by doing and doing by learning is the key to success.
